"Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution the time will come when medicine will organize itself into an undercover dictatorship. To restrict the art of healing to doctors and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic." (Benjamin Rush...a signer of the US Declaration of Independence).

Looking around today at the state of our medical interventions, we may get to wonder at the potential prophetic nature of these words and whether our modern "health services" may be getting less and less to resemble the art and science of healing. It can seem that the doctor's sanctioned role is no longer to facilitate the body's innate self-healing capabilities but rather to provide nurture for a massive medical business enterprise founded upon inherently nihilistic principles of unbridled capitalism.

With long-known symptoms of nutritional deficiency (or even chemical poisoning) repackaged and renamed as would-be monolithic diseases and sold to the consumer as new markets, we tend to see the emergence of gold mines of treatable symptoms, each providing justification for new patented and toxic drug-commodities. Indeed these "medicines" themselves quite often consist of simply re-branded and re-purposed chemicals intended to be administered in sub-lethal concentrations. And these chemical concoctions are so highly leveraged that they sell for multiple times their true cost.

Stepping back a little from the minutae, it's perhaps more clearly evident that true healing is not simply being forgotten but is intentionally being downgraded, given its existential threat to that perpetual profitability which requires incurability of the human body? Were the body's self-regenerative capabilities to be openly acknowledged and honoured, the entire superstructure of our drug-based medicine (with its massive monetary profits for Big Pharma, etc.) could come crashing down.

The world we live in today is increasingly an international playing field where multinational and transnational organisations wield power and influence that way overshadows that of any particular government or nation state (not to mention human-scale decentralised communities). And these mega organisations are increasingly blurring the divisions traditionally drawn between public and private institutions. Looking at their agendas and mandates we can detect a growing consistency with global economic imperatives which do not take account of any individual or national sovereignty or laws over and above their own.

"At the end of times the merchants of the world will deceive the nations through their Pharmacia." - Bible Revelation 18:23. Here again we might wonder whether a medicine no longer directly associated with healing may become a form of mass control with a highly organised means of exploiting people's fears and undermining their true wellbeing. It can seem quite absurd (and even tragic) to expect healing from a medical model treating the symptoms of disease with sub-lethal dosages of toxic chemicals when there's no real attempt to uncover, understand or remove the causes of such imbalances.

Back in Ancient Greece a "pharmakós" was a term applied to a kind of human scapegoat chosen and expelled from the community at times of disaster (famine, invasion, plague, etc.) when some purification was needed. Thus we can see a sacrificial dimension to scapegoating right from the beginning of our western polity. The term later became "pharmakeus" referring to a drug or spell-giving potion, or even a druggist, poisoner, magician or sorcerer. Furthermore a complex variation of the term ("pharmakon") had meant many things including sacrament, remedy, poison, talisman, cosmetic, perfume, intoxicant. And from all this, the modern term "pharmacology" emerged.

Clearly underpinning the evidence-based model of drug development and testing is a reality of large scale animal sacrifice...a core characteristic of our western medicine model seemingly founded in an obsession with pathology. This approach noticeably contrasts with other more traditional and nature-based medical systems which have preferred viewing healthy live human bodies as the model for preventing and treating illness. And we might need to be a deal more

conscious of the "down-the-line" implications of the former more divergent path which could involve patients being themselves cut open on the operating table or "poisoned" with the same chemicals and procedures applied in animal testing. A mindset primarily focussing on pathology rather than holistic persons may not be the healthiest option?

That medical dictatorship mentioned by Benjamin Rush took quite some time to start showing up. Before the era of today's vast armory of pharmaceutical drugs, natural foodstuffs (including herbs) were widely regarded as legitimate medicines. And even after many "wise women" herbalists were eliminated as competition through being branded as "witches", the herbs themselves were not demonised. However, once big business established its unrelenting hold, these long-used natural curative remedies inevitably came to be vilified as dangerous and indeed lampooned as completely ineffectual, impotent and unsafe. It's hardly surprising then that confidence in the safety and efficacy of natural substances for the prevention and treatment of disease widely waned, even to the extent that the idea of any positive association between food and healing came to be denied by medical authorities. And the major casualty is/was truth?
